Objective
The COIN69 Memecoin Index is designed to measure the performance of the memecoin segment of the crypto market as a whole, rather than the fortunes of any single token. It selects the 69 largest liquid memecoins and weights them by circulating market capitalization, with a 20% cap on any one constituent so that the index cannot collapse into a proxy for Dogecoin.
The number 69 is not an accident of the data; it is a deliberately memecoin-native constituent count. Everything else about the construction is conventional index practice: a defined universe, objective screens, a transparent weighting scheme and a fixed rebalance calendar.
Eligible universe
The universe is the set of assets classified as memecoins by the index data provider. From that list, an asset must pass every one of the following screens: at least $1.0M of trailing 24-hour traded volume; a turnover ratio (24-hour volume divided by market capitalization) of at least 0.1%; at least 5 listed market pairs; and at least 30 days since listing. Names and tickers must be expressible in the Latin alphabet.
Wrapped, staked, bridged or otherwise derivative representations of another asset are excluded regardless of tag, since including them would count the same exposure twice. Assets missing a price, market capitalization or volume from the data source are excluded until the data is complete.
Selection and weighting
At each reconstitution the eligible universe is ranked by circulating market capitalization and the top 69 are selected. Each constituent's raw weight is its share of the combined market capitalization of the 69. Any raw weight above 20% is reduced to the cap and the excess is redistributed pro rata across the uncapped constituents; the procedure repeats until no constituent exceeds the cap.
Both the raw and the capped weight are shown throughout this site so the effect of the cap is always visible. The names ranked immediately below the cut form a reserve list and are published on the rebalances page.
Calculation
Constituent prices, market capitalizations, volumes and trailing returns are sourced live from the index data provider. Ahead of launch, basket returns are derived from the weighted trailing returns of the current basket, rebased so that the level equals 1000 at the start of the rolling 90-day window. Weighted returns use the capped weights and treat them as fixed across the window, which is the standard approximation when the data source publishes trailing returns per asset rather than a full price history.
Because the level is recomputed from current constituents, it describes what today’s basket did over the trailing window rather than a chained series across past reconstitutions. It is a live performance gauge, not an audited historical time series.
Rebalance schedule
Monthly, 1st at 00:00 UTC. Reconstitution (re-screening and re-selecting the 69) and rebalancing (resetting capped weights) happen together. Between rebalances weights drift with relative prices. There are no intra-month changes except where the data source delists an asset, in which case it is dropped and the next reserve name is promoted.
What this index is not
It is not an investable product. No fund, token or derivative is offered or implied, and the levels shown do not include the fees, slippage or tracking error a real portfolio would incur. Memecoins are among the most volatile and least liquid assets tracked by any data provider, and several constituents can move by tens of percent in a day.
It is not an endorsement of any constituent. Inclusion is purely mechanical: pass the screens, rank in the top 69. The ecosystem labels are derived from the token’s platform and tags for readability and have no bearing on selection or weighting. Not Financial Advice.
